Kids, there are two kinds of people: Those who naturally love sports and those who learn to love sports. And if there is a third kind of person, nobody worth chatting up wants to hear about it.

The Sullivan Ballou Letter

July 14, 1861
Camp Clark, Washington

My very dear Sarah:
The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days—perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more …

I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing—perfectly willing—to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt …

Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.

The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them for so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me—perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my little Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness …

But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights … always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again …

Sullivan Ballou was killed a week later at the first Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861.

He married Sarah Hart Shumway on October 15, 1855 and entered the military in 1861 after the war broke out. When he died, his wife was 24. Sullivan and Sarah Ballou are buried next to each other at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI. There are no known living descendants.
Ironically, Sullivan Ballou’s letter was never mailed. Although Sarah would receive other, decidedly more upbeat letters, dated after the now-famous letter from the battlefield, the letter in question would be found among Sullivan Ballou’s effects when Gov. William Sprague of Rhode Island traveled to Virginia to retrieve the remains of his state’s sons who had fallen in battle.

I am in love with Miso’s art.
I’m working on a painting/collage inspired by her. Cross you fingers and hope the muse is kind.

This is me.
In a handmade 1920’s inspired wearable art piece.
At a diner. Pancakes were involved.
Would Morgan Freeman consider this an example of time travel? I should think so.

There is a paragraph in John Steinbeck’s East of Eden that has captivated me for the past four years.
I memorized it. I write it on napkins and anything foolish enough to be resting next to my pen. I recently wrote it on a piece of discarded vintage art.
“Tom the third son was most like his father. He was born in fury and he lived in lightning. Tom came headlong into life. He was a giant in joy and enthusiasms. He didn’t discover the world and its people, he created them. When he read his father’s books, he was the first. He lived in a world shining and fresh and as uninspected as Eden on the sixth day. His mind plunged like a colt in a happy pasture, and when later the world put up fences, he plunged against the wire, and when the final stockade surrounded him, he plunged right through it and out. And as he was capable of giant joy, so did he harbor huge sorrow. So that the day his dog died the world ended.”

Once I had a fantastic model. She would model for me as long as I provided wine and Cheeze Its.
If only Cheeze Its were actual currency.

"I like not only to be loved, but also to be told that I am loved. I am not sure that you are of the same mind. But the realm of silence is large enough beyond the grave. This is the world of light and speech, and I shall take leave to tell you that you are very dear"

‘There is a show premiering on ABC this fall called Work It. The sole premise of this show is that women now get all the jobs in the world and men are out of work forever (obvs). So what are the poor men to do? Dress like women of course! Wait a minute, you’re undoubtedly asking yourself, how is that not Bosom Buddies. What a stupid question - This show is nothing like that Tom Hanks classic. After all, these men aren’t living in an apartment complex for women, they don’t have options! Cause they’re pathetic! Boy, I sure am suspicious of all the other ladies that dominate my workplace. ABC has shed light on the fact that men, while unemployable, are incredibly crafty. They’re like cockroaches, and ladies, we will never be free of them. After all - we have to “keep some men around as sex slaves!” (real quote from the show). Excuse me for a moment while I go fire all the men in my office cause as a woman I have that kind of power.’
CONGRATULATIONS, LADIES!! WE DID IT!!  Joey watched the new TV shows coming out and turns out we do, indeed, in the words of Beyonce, RUN THIS MOTHER FUCKER!!! !!! HAHAH! YOUR MOVE, OPPRESSED MALES!!

Time Travel

Dear Lone Reader,

There is this show on the science channel, Through the Wormhole. Narrated by none other than God himself, Morgan Freeman and his freckles. One of the episodes dealt with time, time travel and our perception of time.

Is time real, does it even exist? or is it just perceived as real? There are many theories. As we get older our perception of time literally speeds. If time is only real because we perceive it to be real AND it moves faster as you age, it could theoretically speed up and slow down throughout your life. THUS…YOU ARE LITERALLY A TIME TRAVELLER.

This is fantastic news!

Love,
The Jolly Red Giant

P.S. TARDIS….Get it. GET IT?!……….Anyone?

"I haven’t any right to criticize books, and I don’t do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticize Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can’t conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Every time I read Pride and Prejudice I want to dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone.
